Pulmonology is a medical speciality that focuses on the lungs, windpipe, airways, and respiratory muscles. A pulmonologist treats diseases and disorders that affect breathing, such as asthma, chronic cough, bronchitis, pneumonia, tuberculosis, sleep apnoea, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Breathing fuels the entire body. When the lungs are not working as they should, people may feel tired, short of breath, or unable to carry out everyday activities with ease. Pulmonologists use diagnostic tools to understand what’s affecting the lungs.
Treatment may involve medication, breathing therapy, lifestyle changes, or long-term respiratory support.
